There are two main types of packaging tapes used to seal cartons: plastic pressure-sensitive tapes and paper water-activated tapes. Each has different physical properties, application methods, appearance and performance.
Plastic Pressure Sensitive Tape
Plastic pressure sensitive tape (PST) is a so-called "surface mount" type of tape. This carton sealing tape is made by applying dry adhesive to plastic film. Adhesives and films of various widths, which can be formulated in many different strengths, are petroleum-based materials.
Pressure sensitive tape is usually applied using a hand-held "tape gun". The pressure applied after dispensing the tape, usually with the fingers or palm as a follow-up, causes the tape to adhere to the surface of the carton.

Kraft Paper Tape
Kraft Paper Tape are typically made from white or tan (kraft) paper with a starch-based adhesive. It comes in a variety of widths and thicknesses.Kraft paper tape is also known as adhesive tape, chewing gum tape, kraft paper tape, paper packaging tape or kraft paper tape, kraft paper tape can be further divided into water activated tape and self-adhesive tape.
Water Activated Kraft Paper Tape
Water Activated Tape Use a manual or powered paper tape dispenser to cut the tape to the desired length and automatically apply just the right amount of water to activate the adhesive. When the tape is applied to the carton, the adhesive penetrates the surface of the carton to form a permanent bond.

Self-adhesive Kraft Paper Tape
Self-adhesive tape can be applied using a handheld "tape gun" just like pressure-sensitive tape. The pressure applied after dispensing the tape, usually with the fingers or palm as a follow-up, causes the tape to adhere to the surface of the carton.

If you've ever tried to rip duct tape off a box, you probably struggled and learned quickly that the right way to do it is to cut it where the flaps come together, especially if you plan to reuse the carton.
For more demanding jobs, paper wrapping tape can contain fiberglass filaments. This reinforced packing tape is even stronger than standard paper tape, which is already very strong.
